The Costa del Sol is well known for its stunning beach resorts, so if you're looking to visit a few different places then you'll find there's no shortage of beaches where you can kick back and relax in the Mediterranean sun, or take part in the various activities that are on offer. Some of the most popular resorts nearby are Fuengirola, Benalmadena and Marbella - all of which are less than an hour down the MA-20 and the A-7.

If you're keen to truly immerse yourself in some Spanish culture, then go south 30km on the MA-20, AP-7 and A-387 to Mijas, a village in the mountains that surround Malaga. Enjoy a drink in the sun, explore the beautiful cobbled streets and take in Andalucian charm of the area.

Top attractions to visit in Malaga

Having a hire car really gives you the freedom to explore the best of what Malaga has to offer, so head out and take in the beauty of the Costa del Sol.

Eating and drinking

Food and drink are a huge part of the culture in Spain, and Malaga is no exception. Delicacies in the area include pescaíto frito (deep-fried fish), porra (tomato and dried bread soup) and ajoblanco (bread, almond and garlic soup).

You can be sure to find a variety of fine-wines to wash this down with, or a refreshing jug of Sangria.

Many restaurants, bars and cafes will give you the chance to try a daily selection of tapas dishes, which could be anything from rabbit to cod. If you like to be adventurous with your food then this is a real treat, as you know that you're getting the freshest of ingredients and the best dishes on offer that day.

Things to do

It goes without saying that the beaches are a major attraction in Malaga. The area enjoys particularly hot days between May and September, so during these months you'll find that the coast is very busy.

If you're looking for something a bit more chilled, then why not drive about 40 minutes down the A-7 to Playa Torrox? This area is usually less crowded, so you can really kick back, relax and enjoy the Mediterranean sun in a much more peaceful setting.

Around the city you can see some of the stunning Spanish architecture, as well as the many museums. In fact, Malaga has more museums than any other city in Andalucia, including the Wine Museum, Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Picasso Museum.

Sightseeing

There's so much to see in Malaga, that you'll easily while away the hours exploring and taking in everything it has to offer.

You won't want to miss out on seeing the Baroque Cathedral, popularly known as La Manquita (one armed woman), or the stunning Roman theatre.

On the hill above the city you can also see Gibralfaro Castle, where you can enjoy a bite to eat, explore the fascinating surroundings and enjoy the panoramic views across the city and the coast.
