Marseille is the capital of Provence and one of the largest cities in France. It is also a port located on the Mediterranean Sea. It is famous for both it’s food and rich cultural heritage particularly the influence of immigrants from North Africa who have added a vibrant French African quarter to the city. The French national anthem “La Marseillaise” is named after the city and dates from the French Revolution.

As Marseille is located on France’s south coast it is close to many popular resorts such as Cannes, Monaco and Nice. It is becoming increasingly popular to stay in a beach resort and visit Marseille in a series of day trips.

The most famous food from Marseille is Bouillabaisse. It is a Provencal fish stew, and contains a mixture of fish, shellfish and herbs. It is similar in cooking style to Ratatouille and both are examples of Provencal style cooking. There are also fine examples of North African cuisine available across the city especially near to the famous African market. Many of the cities most famous restaurants are situated near to the Vieux Port. Rose wine is also widely dunk in this area

Marseilles rich and varied history is evident from some of the cities most visited attractions. Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde , Phare de Sainte Marie and the Vieux Port are all popular with visitors and the city has a high standard of Museums and Art Galleries. The principality of Monaco and the town of Aix are also within a short drive.

The main sporting stadium in Marseille is the Stade Velodrome. It is home to the Olympic Marseille football team and is regularly used by the French Rugby Union Team. It holds 60’000 spectators and was built in 1937.
