Lyon is the third largest city in France and is located in the south west of France. It is the capital of the Rhone region and is famous for it’s silk production. It is also home to the headquarters of Interpol. Two of France’s major wine producing regions Beaujolais and Cotes du Rhone are located near to Lyon.

For such a large city, the accommodation choices are surprisingly limited in the town centre. More people tend to fly into Lyon Airport and drive out into the famous French countryside. There are large selections of traditional French guesthouses although Lyon does offer international accommodation in the town centre, and near the airport.

The Lyonnais region is famous for it’s food. The BBC’s hairy bikers called its chicken “the best chicken in world”. You find it in a town called Bourg-en-Bresse in Eastern France. The menu mainly consists of meat and local produce, although vegetarians may find their menu choices limited in some of the traditional restaurants.

The museums of Lyon are particularly popular and are located close to each other in the city centre. They include the Musée de la Résistance, Musées des Arts Décoratifs and Musée des Tissus. The history of the French resistance and the arts are well represented. Guided tours of the Croix-Rousse or Vieux Lyon are available but it is worth checking with the local tourist board as combined tickets may be offered which include attractions a short drive outside the city. Tours of local vineyards are increasingly available and offer great value for money when compared to similar tours in other wine producing areas of France.

The most popular sport in this city is Football and Olympique Lyonnais are their representative in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League. They play at Stade de Gerland which was built in 1920 and currently seats 43’051 spectators. There are also rugby league and rugby union teams called Lyon OU and Lyon Villeurbanne Rhône à XIIIL respectively..
