Bordeaux is on the Atlantic coast of France and while famous for it’s wine making, it is also one of the largest cities in France and home to one of the largest universities in Europe. Some 3 million tourists visit Bordeaux each year and the city is also home to some of the largest aeronautical companies in France.

For a city with so many visitors each year, there is still a pleasant mix of hotels and budget accommodation available in the city. The Quai and Railway station areas tend to have some of the tourist hotels. Some of the more luxurious hotels are located just on the outskirts of the city, near the lake.

Unsurprisingly given its Atlantic coast location, the food tends to lean towards the sea and the grape. Caviar, oysters and lobster are all readily available, but one of the cities most popular dishes is Entrecôte à la Bordelaise (beef with red wine). Keep an eye your waistline though as many of the dishes are cooked in goose and duck fat.

Many visitors to Bordeaux tend to drive out to the countryside and explore the vineyards. Many people choose to drive to see Millau Bridge or the Aquantine Viaduct, which are both fantastic examples of French engineering. Much of central Bordeaux was built in 18th century and is easily accessible. Place de la Bourse, Esplanade des Quinconces and Colonnes des Girondins are all very popular. The Rue Sainte-Catherine boasts over 1.2km of shops, bars and restaurants.

Football, rugby and cycling are all very popular in Bordeaux. The Velodrome du Lac hosted cycling events in the UCI World Cup. Stade Chaban-Delmas is the largest stadium in the city and holds 34237 spectators. It is home to FC Girondins de Bordeaux who play in the French Ligue 1.
