Stansted Airport, one of the busiest in the United Kingdom, is located 48 kilometres northeast of London, in the Uttlesford District of Essex County. If you're flying into Stansted in summer, and festivals are your cup of tea, a trip to London is a can't-miss proposition. Summer boasts two weeks of tennis splendour at the All-England Tennis Club, whose grass courts host the most venerable of professional tennis's four Grand Slam tournaments, Wimbledon. Around the same time, the Queen's festive birthday parade (called Trooping the Colour) takes place. London Pride, the biggest gay and lesbian festival in all of Europe, happens in the summer as well, and in August the West End streets are taken over by the rowdy Notting Hill Carnival.
Colchester is a reasonable drive from Stansted Airport as well, and a prime destination for history buffs. Colchester's claim to fame is that of being England's oldest town, although residents of Abingdon and Marazion make a case for themselves as well. What's certain is that Colchester is home to some magnificent historic structures, particularly the medieval Colchester Castle. The Colchester Castle Museum is housed there, offering exhibits on the early days of Roman Colchester.
