history
Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands, gained distinction in its early history as a major trade port between Africa and Europe. All manner of calamity set in the ensuing centuries: civil strife, epidemics, drought, and famine all served to undermine the area until tourism took hold in the 1950s and catapulted Palma to prominence in the region. Today, millions descend on Palma’s beaches every year, and resorts now crowd the coastline.

things to see
A popular attraction in Palma is the Palau de l’Almudaina, a magnificent fortress that was formerly a royal residence. Moorish-style gardens and fountains surround the structure, which is now home to a museum filled with antiques, Gobelin tapestries, and suits of armor. You can also get great views of Palma’s harbor area from here.

Public beaches in the area include Playa Nova (about a 30-minute drive from downtown Palma). Other popular beaches include those in the village of Ca’n Pastilla, as well as those at nearby El Arenal. Palma also caters to bikers, with most roads featuring special bike lanes due to the activity’s popularity. C'an Picafort, Alcúdia, and Port de Pollença are all relatively flat areas on the north coast, and the best for biking.

Palma Airport, also known as Son Sant Joan Airport, is just eight kilometers from the city centre, with several car hire companies offering on-site pick-up.
