history
As suggested by its name, which translates roughly to "from the source," the French city of Nīmes is known for its long, long history. Some human presence can be traced as far back as 3500-4000 BC. After a time of prosperity as a Roman colony, Nīmes came under siege from all sides by the end of the 3rd century, when the Visigoths, Ostrogoths, and Burgunds took turns sacking the city. Ensuing centuries saw even more misery, between further invasions, famine, and plague. The city didn't begin to dust itself off until the 19th century, when its economy began to improve. Recent history has seen tourism become a boon to the area as well.

The ancient Roman structures preserved in Nīmes are endlessly rewarding. The ruins of a Roman shrine act as the centerpiece for the Jardin de la Fontaine, regarded as one of the most striking gardens in all of France. The Tour Magne is the city's oldest Roman landmark, and it sits atop Mont Cavalier, which is not far from the gardens.
