guide to manchester

history
Manchester is an old city, but most of its medieval history is unknown today, thanks to London’s Great Fire of 1666, which charred all of the city records. The city’s tradition of wool and linen weaving, dating back to the 1300s, set it up to capitalize hugely on the importing of cotton from the American colonies in the 1700s. Manchester raced to the forefront of the fledgling – and soon to be booming – textile industry, and eventually grew to become the centre of the Industrial Revolution. The city’s population swelled as workers came from all over to man the cotton mills. Over time, the frenzied growth and economic vitality fell victim to competition, depression, and a failure to keep in step with modernisation. Recently, though, the town has gone through a renaissance, and its hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games seems to indicate that Manchester is a city on the comeback trail.

shopping
Manchester is a haven for shoppers on holiday in England, second only to London. The West End is home to the city’s designer shops, while the north end of Deansgate is where you can find more standard items. If you’re looking to make a day of it, you can take your car hire out to the massive mall called Trafford Centre. The UK’s biggest shopping centre, it houses almost 300 stores.

things to see
Manchester is a treat for museum enthusiasts. The Manchester Art Gallery houses impressive works by many distinguished British artists and other European masters. The gallery’s older wing boasts England’s best collection of pre-Raphaelite pieces, while its newer wing displays a striking selection of modern British masters like Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, and David Hockney. Manchester’s key role in the Industrial Revolution is chronicled in exhaustive detail at the Museum of Science and Industry. The museum – the city’s biggest – is spread out across two massive warehouses and the oldest passenger railway terminal in the world.
