Mahón, the capital city of the Balearic Island Minorca, was built on the site of an old castle overlooking a 5.5-kilometres harbour. Its harbour has long been considered one of the island’s most important, and since the 20th century the economy has been bolstered by the influx of travellers to the area.

Originally built in 1287 in the Gothic style, then rebuilt in 1772, Esglesia de Santa María la Major features a renowned organ with over 3,000 pipes, dating back to 1810. The organ is at the centre of a summer music festival. The respected Xoriguer Gin Distillery is another attraction for travellers. You can watch the Minorcan gin being processed, sip a sample or two, and buy a bottle to take home at the store on-site.

Shopping is a favorite pastime for visitors to Mahón. Es Portal is a popular clothing shop, featuring the wares of big-label designers like Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and more. Looky Boutique is an outlet for high-quality Minorcan leather goods such as handbags and shoes.

One of the most impressive beaches on the island, Cala’n Porter, is located a short seven-kilometre drive from Mahón. Another popular beach is Es Grau. Along the road you’ll pass through the S'Albufera salt marshes, home to many migrant birds. Once you’ve reached Es Grau beach, there’s a boat you can take to Illa d'en Colom, an island in the bay that has some pretty beaches as well.

It’s also worth taking your rental car to Naveta d'es Tudons, which is five kilometres east of the city of Ciudadela. Here you can view the most extensive and best-preserved collection of megalithic monuments on the island of Minorca. The naveta (a boat-shaped monument) here is believed to one of the oldest monuments in all of Europe.
