Jersey is one of the five British crown dependencies in the Channel Islands off the coast of Normandy. The island was a part of the Duchy of Normandy until 1204, when it began an era of self-government that continues to the present day. Improved intra-island transportation in the 19th century brought prosperity to the area, as farmers became able to quickly shuttle crops from the mainland onto ships and then on to Paris and London, well ahead of the competition. Also around this time, through a rigorous breeding programme, islanders “invented” the Jersey cow, distinguished by the high butterfat content of its milk. The island of Jersey has several impressive beaches to lure travellers on holiday. St. Ouen’s Bay is renowned for its waves, boasting some of the best surfing in Europe.
