Gerona, one of Spain’s most important cities historically, is located about 100 kilometres from Barcelona. Gerona was founded by the Romans, then later came under control of the Moors. In 1809, Gerona is said to have turned back three separate invasions by Napoléon's forces, which helped give the city its moniker: “The City of a Thousand Sieges.” The Onyar River runs through this old medieval town, and many travellers visiting the Costa Brava make day excursions to wander Gerona’s Call, a labyrinthine quarter made up of steep, narrow alleys and ancient stone homes.

Much of Gerona’s nightlife revolves around tapas bar- and café-hopping. You can find many along La Rambla and along the perimeter of Plaça de Independencia. Vibrant tapas bars in the city centre include Bar de Tapes and Tapa’t. Bar Boira, on Plaça de Independencia, is known for its bustling, good-natured vibe and delicious shellfish and seafood tapas.

Later in the night, the discos get going. Disco/Sala de Fiestas Platea is located in the city’s oldest section, tucked away in an alley behind Gerona’s central post office. It doesn’t even open until 11 PM, and stays jumping till 5 in the morning. L-Suitt is another popular club, notable for its appeal to people in their 20s as well as 40s. Maybe the most unique club in Gerona is Disco Glops, found across the river in the Parque de la Devesa. This park is well-appointed with artful landscaping, and during the summer months, refreshment stands, and open-air bars where revelers dance on wooden decks. Disco Glops is one such club.

Gerona-Costa Brava Airport is well-situated for rewarding side trips by hired car. Barcelona is just an hour drive.
