Early in its history, Geneva, Switzerland came to be a hotbed of the Protestant Reformation led by John Calvin. In fact, the Reformation took such hold there that people referred to the city as the “Protestant Rome.” After this, Geneva entered a period of austerity and demureness during which the wearing of jewels and the act of dancing were thought of as wicked. Through it all, though, Geneva drew many free thinkers and intellectuals, such as Rousseau and Voltaire. The city’s reputation as an open-minded, global centre got its start when humanitarian Henry Dunant spurred the founding of the International Red Cross in Geneva in 1864. Dunant eventually shared honors as the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1901.

While there is plenty to do in Geneva proper, the area just over the French border beckons to travellers just as temptingly. Barely into French territory lies the Téléphérique du Salève in the town of Veyrier. This cable car brings you up to a high alpine ridge you can take in amazing views of Lake Geneva and Mount Blanc (the highest point in the Alps) while exploring its circuit of walking trails. If you choose, you can ascend Mont Salève, or House Mountain, by rental car. This mountain is a hot spot for rock climbers, and its peak tops out at 1,200 metres.

Savoie is a French département in the Alps, home to several world-class ski resorts, including the famous Trois Vallées ski region that towers above the town of Moûtiers. The region boasts resorts like Courchevel, Orelle (the newest), Méribel (the oldest), and Val Thorens (the highest). The three valleys can be skied on a single pass, making it the largest ski facility in the world. All told, there are more than 600 kilometres of runs. Albertville, Savoie hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics.
