Geneva, Switzerland has a truly international flavor: almost half of residents are non-natives. Geneva is situated idyllically in the southwestern corner of the Swiss Alps, with its city centre located on the shore of stunning alpine Lake Geneva, and the Rhone River running right through it.

Geneva is home to many annual events, including the Fêtes de Genève, spread out over two weekends in August and featuring parade, outdoor concerts, and fireworks shows. In June, over 600 boats and yachts fill Lake Geneva for the Bol d’Or (Golden Cup) Race.

One of the largest fountains in the world, the Jet d’Eau (Water Jet) shoots 500 litres of water 140 metres into the air. Placed at the point where Lake Geneva empties into the Rhone River, the fountain is visible from almost anywhere in the city.

Geneva is also a strategic jumping-off point for the Alps, a skier’s paradise only a short drive away. The Chamonix and Megève resorts at Haute Savoie in France feature some of the more popular slopes, and are both about an hour from Geneva by rental car. The Glacier of Les Diablerets is closer to Geneva and also offers good skiing.

Geneva is Switzerland’s nerve center for nightlife. Au Chat Noir (The Black Cat) draws a crowd as eclectic as its musical acts: On a given night you might hear jazz, Latin music, rock, or world music. Mr. Pickwick Pub is sometimes called the “Tower of Babble,” due to the confluence of wildly diverse patrons speaking different languages, due in part to it being a United Nations employee hangout.

Geneva is also a shopping haven, known primarily for its watches and jewelry, but you can find a little of everything in its many shops, including the famed Swiss chocolate, cuckoo clocks made in German Switzerland, and cigars from Havana (Davidoff, on Rue de Rive, is one of the most acclaimed tobacco stores in the world).
