1. Dyrham Park
This country park has a 17th Century mansion, gardens, tea-rooms and a deer park to explore. Take a camera and a picnic.
Leave the airport and follow the A38 motorway towards Bristol. Look for the A4044 toward the M32 and follow that road all the way to the M4. Follow the M4 motorway to Junction 18, exit, and follow signs for the park from there.
2. Oakham Treasures
Step back in time to your own, or even your parents childhood at this museum of toys, sweeties, hardware and tobacco. There are an unbelievable number of nik-naks and curiosities to discover and you’ll be surprised how quickly the hours tick away. Make sure you put enough time on the ticket for your hire car parking.
Leave the airport and follow the A38 north. Take the B3130 exit onto Barrow Street. Turn right onto the B3129 onto Belmont Hill, followed by the B3128 and follow signs for Oakham Treasures from there.
3. Weston-Super-Mare
No trip to Bristol would be complete without a visit to the coast and possibly the best place do that, is Weston-Super-Mare. This traditional English coastal resort has everything a seaside town should - a pier, a ferris wheel, bucket and spade sellers, chip shops and thieving seagulls.
Follow signs for the A370 from the airport and stay on this road all the way to the seaside. Easy.
4. Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean
Forming part of the Brecon Beacons, this region has a wide range of activities to suit all tastes. For the energetic, there’s hiking, cycling and kayaking. For the more laid-back, there’s shopping, walking and eating opportunities galore - the cheese here is second to none.
Leave the airport and follow the A38 north towards Bristol. From there take the A4 to the M49 motorway and join the M4 at junction 22. Go over the Severn Bridge, and leave the M4 at Junction 25A. The A4042 will take you all the way to the edge of the Park, local signs will guide you from there.
