guide to birmingham

history
Birmingham is England's second-largest city next to London, which lies roughly 200 kilometres to the southeast. Thanks in part to being the birthplace of the steam engine in 1775, Birmingham is widely regarded as the spawning ground of the Industrial Revolution. In the 19th century, an industrious system of canals was constructed in order to transport everything being manufactured in the area. (Birmingham has even more canals than Venice.) After rampant bombing ruined much of the city centre during World War II, Birmingham rebuilt quickly, primarily with concrete, leading many to describe it as a "concrete jungle." Recent years have seen major renovations and restorations to older streets and canals, which have served to make the city more attractive to travellers.

things to do
Birmingham International Airport offers convenient car-hire pickup, and once you've got your wheels you might consider an enriching side trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. A mere 40 kilometres from Birmingham, this is the hometown of William Shakespeare. You can tour several Shakespeare-related sites, including the Holy Trinity Church where he was baptised and where his body now rests. Also here is the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, sitting on the banks of the Avon River.

The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and the Barber Institute are two excellent museums in Birmingham. The Barber Institute offers a respectable collection of modern pieces, including those by Picasso and Schiele, but it's best known for a strong showing from the Renaissance masters such as Rubens and Van Dyck. Some British standouts weigh in as well, with fine pieces by Turner, Gainsborough, and Reynolds.

shopping
Travellers looking to satisfy their shopping itch will find endless opportunities in Birmingham, particularly along New Street and Cannon Street, where big-name designer stores have recently opened. The Bullring, located near St. Martin's Square, is considered the largest city-centre shopping area in all of Europe. An eye-catching department store called Selfridges is nearby, and is known as much for its inventive design as for its wares – its exterior features 15,000 aluminum disks resembling chain mail.
