history
Alicante is the second-largest town in the Valencia region of Spain. The town rose to prominence in the 15th century, when it became a big Mediterranean trading post for oranges, wine, and olive oil, only to suffer a long decline starting in the early 1600s, when King Felipe III expelled thousands of artisans and farmers who formed the backbone of Alicante’s economy. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the town began a comeback, fortified by the increased power and autonomy granted to Spain’s regional governments by the new king, Juan Carlos I.

Much of Alicante’s allure lies in its authenticity: the town feels like a real town, not a resort-filled tourist destination. Which is not to say it doesn’t offer common tourist fare: the beaches and bars are top-notch and not to be missed. The coast here is known for its warm waters, which average 27 degrees Celsius in August.

Shopping is a big draw in Alicante, too. Handcrafted artifacts – ceramics, woodcarvings, candleholders, and more -- can be found in abundance in shops around the town. Alicante’s biggest department store, El Corte Inglés, is a good place to find bargains.

Festival seekers can get their fix in late June when the week-long Festival de Sant Joan kicks off. The raucous festival culminates in a massive fireworks display, and rampant burning of the fogueres (huge satirical figures constructed by revelers throughout the week) in the streets.

Alicante is also home to impressive museums. Museu de Arte del Siglo XX Asegurada calls the city’s oldest building home – but is home to only modern art, with the likes of Picasso, Miró, and Kandinsky all represented. The MARQ (Museo Arqueológico Provincial) boasts a renowned collection of ceramics and Iberian art, and garnered a nomination for European Museum of the Year in 2004.
