Destination Spotlight: Geneva

genevaAcross the globe there are many cities that boast a cosmopolitan or multicultural vibe but few can make that claim with as much authority as Geneva. Coming here is like visiting the whole world in one city – no matter what language you speak or nationality you belong to, you can find someone like you while at the same time being introduced to a hundred others who aren’t. Whether you plan on visiting the city for business or pleasure Geneva caters for you – and then some. But make no mistake; this city is one of the most expensive in the world. Pick up a hire car at Geneva Airport and check out some of these highlights to get your money’s worth:


Quite literally speaking, some of the biggest decisions in the world are made in Geneva. It is home to a multitude of corporate head offices but perhaps most importantly, it is home to the European headquarters of the UN, the World Health Organisation, the International Federation of the Red Cross and the World Trade Organisation to name just a few. You can take guided tours around most of the major facilities and walk in the footsteps of global leaders and decision makers.

The Great Outdoors

Surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains, it’s impossible to be in Geneva and forget that you are in the oh-so-scenic Switzerland. Take a drive out to one of the resorts for snow-bound sports and activities, or head to Lake Geneva, the largest alpine lake in Europe for a walk along its shores, a trip onto the water for a spot of sailing, water-skiing or rafting, or a trip under its surface to go scuba diving.


A city that regularly hosts the global elite can be expected to lay on some quality entertainment. During the day you can visit any of the museums or art galleries, there are over forty to choose from. When the sun goes down, you could treat yourself to a decadent evening at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices which offers visitors music, drama and ballet performances, or enjoy a laid-back couple of hours at the Ciné Lac which screens films at its outdoor screen by the lakeside.

We could write pages and pages of top-notch nosh recommendations or you could just trust us when we say that it’s all good. Don’t be surprised if you come home with a tighter fitting waistband than you left with. And that’s just the food, we haven’t even mentioned the chocolate – that is worthy of a feature on its own.


Give your credit card a workout and your bank manager cause for concern with a splurge in the shops. Geneva specialises in the finest of everything. Known especially for its watchmakers and jewellers, you will also find a whole host of designer boutiques and fashion houses waiting to provide you with a luxury shopping experience like no other. The Globus Department Store is perhaps one of the most chic; dress smartly before you go.


In such an international city, you might be left yearning for something a little less indulgent and a little more, Genevois.  You’ll find it in the Pâquis quarter, among the secondhand stores selling boho goods, cool bistros and restaurants serving up hearty, ethnic foods, and bookstores as well as independent shops selling original arts and crafts.
