Home
to the largest gothic cathedral in Europe, and residency for
celebrities including Dame Judy Dench, Guy Fawkes, Harry Enfield
and Hunter from TV’s “Gladiators”, York is
a splendid example of medieval England.
Present
day York has been shaped throughout its history by numerous
influences. Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking occupation all left
indelible marks, continuing all the way through to Norman
times and the War of the Roses (1453-1487). The removal of
the Royal Garrison in 1688 saw the city become dominated by
the local aristocracy, prompting the construction of the many
elegant town houses and civic buildings still present today.
York racecourse was also built during this period, which will
play host to this year's Royal Ascot Meeting whilst Ascot
racecourse undergoes redevelopment.
York is
now a centre of medieval and historic culture. Micklegate
Bar contains over 800 years of local macabre past and represents
the gateway to York; whilst Clifford’s Tower, originally
built by William the Conqueror to subdue the rebellious north,
now provides fantastic panoramic views of York and the surrounding
countryside. For a more thespian touch, visit the Grand Opera
House, the county’s biggest fully operational theatre,
or venture back in time to York Minster, the largest medieval
gothic cathedral north of the Alps and home to 800 years of
stained glass.
With so
much to see and do, why not rent a hire car to take full advantage
of what York has to offer? The thriving towns of Leeds and
Bradford are both within easy driving distance, and with 2
car rental locations in the city (offering fully comprehensive
car hire), it is a perfect opportunity to spread your wings
and enjoy the surrounding area. |
